Its time for our February Feature, local interior designer Laura Engen!
We have never been able to figure out exactly where we met. But I suspect it was at the opening night party for the MSP Magazine show home where she designed the cozy outdoor spaces of the coastal style home you see below! We officially connected over coffee to trade ideas on marketing our businesses! Both of us being at an age in the middle of the social media savvy millennials and the more traditional Gen x’ers, we see the importance of web marketing but sometimes have a hard time constantly posting our projects on social media sites. We love to collab with other people in the business to learn what is working for them since spending hours of precious work time online isn’t always an option!
With 2 little ones at home, Laura is the epitome of the girl boss, making every moment count in order to balance her business with her home life! Finding what works and what doesn’t from other pro helps to save time on trial and error. She began her career working with an established interior designer for 6 years before branching out on her own path. Her schooling in interior design from Alexandria Tech allowed her to focus on residential design rather than the commercial design driven programs of a large school.
A lot of us were required to create a business plan in college but when it comes time to actually starting the business sometimes you have to roll with the punches and alter it as you go! Did you start with a business plan?
“I don’t know if you can call it a business plan, but my motto for the first year was take every job that comes your way and make it up as you go! I really focused on taking it one day at a time and doing what I know best, working hard and making people happy.”
Hiring a designer is sometimes considered a luxury rather than being looked at in the perspective that it will save you time and money in the long run. What is the easiest way for homeowners to achieve a new look on a budget when a designer is not an option?
“Naturally I think everyone should consult a designer before taking on a project to avoid making costly mistakes. However I know that hiring a designer might not be in the cards for everyone. I would recommend investing in nice upholstery and then adding inexpensive accents that can be changed out easily with the seasons or as your tastes change. Things like pillows, rugs, artwork, and accessories are easy changes and can make a big impact on a room!”
What stores give you inspiration?
“For exclusive furniture and fabrics I love the showrooms at IMS (International Market Square), they carry the most unique products. But when I’m working on a budget Home Goods, West Elm, CB2 and Target are a few of my favorite sources.”
And lastly, this is why I love her! We aren’t saving lives but designers can drastically improve the quality of life that people live in their spaces! She couldn’t have said it better!
“Alot of people severely underestimate the importance of loving the environment you live in. It’s so crucial that your home looks and (more importantly) functions the way you want it to. Even the smallest thing can make a big difference…..styling those bookcase shelves that you walk past everyday, or adding pillows to your sofa that complete the look. And if you’re not sure how to do that on your own, consult a designer!”
Keep on goin girl! So excited for the future and helping each other grow! Fresh perspectives and creative people are the yin to my yang and help inspire me everyday!!
