Hello everyone! Welcome to the first ever fresh lifestyle Monday with ADORNED AT HOME! As I said on instagram this morning, good food is such an important thing to me. Not just for nutrition but because it’s one of my favorite things to do; cook, try new restaurants, and learn about quality + sustainability with food! If I wasn’t a designer | realtor I would be a chef. Making healthy choices is hard, eating like crap is easy so each Monday we’ll be sharing a recipe supporting a fresh lifestyle.
About 10 years ago I started having alot of digestive issues. A few years later, I finally visited a specialist and had signs of chronic damage to the lining of my intestines, often found in people with Crohn’s disease. A major food snob, there was rarely a food I would turn down. The more indulgent, carb heavy or sweet, the better. But, after battling these problems for soooo long I had to become smarter and more informed about the food I was putting into my body or risk the chance of it turning into something worse. Because I did not have an official diagnosis, I went with an elimination diet to see what would help. I cut out gluten, sugar, processed foods and alcohol for a few months before my symptoms completely disappeared. I re-introduced things until I found a happy medium for my foodie + healthy lifestyle.
There are a handful of things I eat on a regular basis that are healthy and easy, which is why I can keep them in the rotation on the regular! Every Monday I will be sharing a recipe for one of those healthy choices plus a few indulgences here and there because, lets be honest, I indulge at least once a day!
The first recipe of fresh lifestyle Monday is a super clean, gluten free, vitamin rich smoothie. I make this at least half of my mornings during the week, especially if I am on the go! The Lemon & Kale smoothie is packed with gut healthy ingredients and gives your immune system an extra boost. Kale is extremely high in vitamin C in addition to fiber, calcium and iron.
I rarely follow a recipe exactly, you can do the same and adjust these ingredients to your liking. If you like it sweeter, add more fruit. If you prefer almond milk, use that! But don’t bail on the kale! The kale and lemon are the essential, nutrient rich ingredients in this smoothie so don’t opt out of these.
SLICE OF LEMON
LARGE LEAF OF DINOSAUR KALE
1/2 PEAR OR 1/2 BANANA FOR SWEETNESS
1/2 TBLS GROUND FLAX
WHOLE MILK | COCONUT MILK
ADD WATER AS DESIRED FOR CONSISTENCY
*USE ORGANIC WHEN POSSIBLE
1) SLICE LEMON, USE ENTIRE PIECE INCLUDING RIND
2) REMOVE STEM ON KALE & CHOP ROUGHLY INTO LARGE PIECES
3) SLICED PEAR OR BANANA
4) ADD GROUND FLAX TO BLENDER
5) ADD WHOLE MILK OR COCONUT MILK TO YOUR LIKING
6) FINISH WITH WATER IF YOU LIKE YOUR SMOOTHIES THINNER
FINAL: ADD ALL INGREDIENTS TO YOUR BLENDER & BLEND UNTIL SMOOTH
