As all trends tend to do, wallpaper left the scene for a while but is back in full swing! Especially modern prints in kitchens. It’s a trend I love to see and have written, on various occasions, about my extreme love for wallpaper. If I had to make one complaint, though, it would be removing old wallpaper, I hate it! So as a public service announcement Im letting everyone know that you should use sizing (a substance that is painted on walls prior to wallpaper and has many benefits including easier removal)! Just do it:)
To fuel with my wallpaper obsession, we completed a galley kitchen remodel over the summer that consisted of a focal point wall of black tree wallpaper. My client commented that everyone who came to check out the new space liked the renovated kitchen but would say “that wallpaper though”. It was literally the star of the show!
A turn of the century Minneapolis home, it featured the typical small kitchen that was common to that time period. Desiring a larger space with a more movement we decided along with the client to remove some walls and tear out the soffit. The poorly made cabinets were not worth saving so the room was reconfigured to accommodate some modern amenities including a built-in microwave, custom vent hood and ceiling height cabinets. The fridge and stove locations were switched to allow for a less obstructed view into the kitchen.
Microwave compartments are one of my favorite keys to a well designed kitchen, its not an appliance that is pretty or needs to be center stage so hiding it in the base cabinets allows for more pretty space on the top portion of the kitchen!
This wall was open up to the moldings along the ceiling and to the floor to create a large doorway looking into the kitchen. This makes for easier entertaining, additional cabinet space and a kitchen that feels much larger than it is!
Last thing I HAVE to mention! The lighting, this small space has killer lighting now! The soft gold blended well with the warm honey tones in the floor and windows plus added modern style! Everything found on Bellacor.com!
Major change to this space while keeping the main walls intact! Bright, white kitchen perfection!
Want to try adding wallpaper to your home but don’t know how? First, decide on if you want to add color or keep it neutral. Second, what kind of look do you want to achieve; modern, traditional, etc. Geometric prints have come on strong lately and can be paired with different home styles especially if the colors are neutral. Third, consider price. Grass cloth is generally a high ticket item compared to a paper selection. Ready to get started? Here are some of our favorites !
